Hot Weather Beauty & Skin Care Tips!

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation,

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 1 million skin cancers are diagnosed annually.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common form of skin cancer. More than 250,000 cases are diagnosed each year, resulting in approximately 2,500 deaths each year.
  • One in 5 Americans and one in 3 Caucasians will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime.
  • More than 90 percent of all skin cancers are caused by sun exposure.
  • A person's risk for skin cancer doubles if he or she has had five or more sunburns.
  • Exposure to tanning beds before age 35 increases melanoma risk by 75 percent. For more about the increased risks of tanning beds, visit: http://www.skincancer.org/

Skin Cancer Foundation Prevention Tips

  • Seek the shade, especially between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M.
  • Do not burn.
  • Avoid tanning and UV tanning booths: Tanning beds and going outdoors without sunscreen both have long-lasting, damaging effects on your skin.
  • Tanning beds use damaging UV rays. They're not a safe alternative to a natural tan. Consider a sunless tanning product like a bronzer or extender instead.
  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day.
  • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30  minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours.
  • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
  • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months.
  • Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.
  • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam.

  • For the Face

    • Cleanse just one a day: Too much washing can actually dry out your face, prompting skin cells to overproduce oil . . . and give you an unflattering greasy shine!  Use a facial cleanser at night, and simply splash your face with water in between to refresh it.
    • Exfoliate just one a week: Too much exfoliation can make your skin more prone to sun damage during the Summer months.  As you take off the top layer of dead skin cells, you expose more sensitive skin underneath.
    • Protect your lips: Use an SPF lip balm, like our Pina Colada SPF 15 Protective Lip Balm, to prevent painful sunburns. Lips need just as much conditioning and attention in the Summer as in the cold winter months!

    For the Body

    • Use a hydrating body wash: Applying lotion in sweltering heat can melt it into a gooey, greasy film.  Instead, try just using our White Tea & Shea Shower Cream when you shower.  It will moisturize and nourish your skin without leaving a greasy film!
    • Use a hydrating body mist or spray lotion to substitute your cologne: Instead of spraying your body with cologne which may make you more susceptible to sun damage in the Summer, spritz on our Hydrating Body Mist or Shea Spray Lotion custom-scented with your favorite fragrance.  Not only will it refresh and leave a delicate veil of fragrance, but it will also nourish and hydrate the skin without leaving a greasy film!

    For the Hair

Wash your hair less often: Sun, chlorine, ocean water and shampooing everyday all make your hair more susceptible to dryness.  Protect it by shampooing less often and on the off days, spritz your scalp with our Fresh Hair Fragrance Mist to keep it conditioned and refreshed!

    For the Feet

    • Protect your soles: Not only are calluses an unsightly scene during sandal wearing season, but they can also crack and become painful!  Condition and nourish your feet with an easy at home, weekly routine.
    1. Soak: Soak your feet in a nourishing foot bath of Shea Butter Foot Soak
    2. Slough off: Slough away dry, scaly skin with a pumice stone and our Shea Pumice Foot Scrub
    3. Moisturize: For added protection and renewal finish with use our Peppi Foot Lotion or Extreme Foot Cream.
    4. Revitalize: Wake up your feet with our tingling Peppermint Foot Spray
